Today, Mr. Watt's and Mrs. Buford's high school science and health classes had a special visitor—PCHS Class of 2018 alumna, Miss Ashley Cornell. Now a dedicated Phlebotomist at Putnam County Memorial Hospital, Ashley returned to her alma mater to share valuable insights into the world of medical laboratory sciences. Her visit not only provided students with firsthand knowledge about a career in healthcare but also supported our district’s Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) by promoting career readiness and real-world learning experiences.

Learning About Phlebotomy and Medical Laboratory Careers

Ashley gave students a deep dive into the vital role of phlebotomists in healthcare, explaining how they collect blood samples for testing, a crucial step in diagnosing and treating patients. She also introduced students to the various career paths available in medical laboratories, from Clinical Lab Assistants to Medical Laboratory Scientists and even Pathologists. She discussed education pathways, including certification programs at Indian Hills Community College, making these careers feel more accessible for students considering a future in healthcare.

Understanding MRSA and the Importance of Laboratory Work

One of the highlights of Ashley’s visit was her discussion on Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Students learned about how antibiotic-resistant bacteria develop, who is most at risk, and how MRSA infections can be prevented and treated. She emphasized the importance of proper handwashing, surface disinfection, and responsible antibiotic use—practical knowledge that can help students stay healthy in their daily lives.
Additionally, Ashley walked students through the various departments within a medical lab, including:
  • Microbiology – Studying bacteria and fungi to detect infections.
  • Hematology – Analyzing blood and clotting functions.
  • Chemistry – Testing body fluids for disease diagnosis.
  • Immunology – Understanding immune responses and conditions.
  • Blood Banking – Ensuring patients receive safe transfusions.
She even provided a behind-the-scenes look at lab equipment like the Chemistry Analyzer, Hematology Analyzer, and Centrifuge, demonstrating how technology plays a crucial role in modern healthcare.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Ashley’s visit is a prime example of how our alumni give back to the next generation of learners. Her willingness to take time out of her busy schedule to educate and inspire future healthcare professionals is a testament to the strong Putnam County R-I community spirit.
Thank you, Miss Ashley Cornell, for sharing your knowledge and experience with our students. Your passion for healthcare and dedication to patient care are truly inspiring!
