Meet Coach Sara Webb: Leading PC Softball into a New Era
As the sun sets over Max Mothersbaugh Field tonight and the crack of the bat kicks off our annual Hit-a-Thon, there’s a renewed sense of excitement in the air for Putnam County Softball. At the heart of it is a familiar face—PC Alumna and new Varsity Head Softball Coach, Sara Webb—who’s bringing fresh energy, deep roots, and a clear vision for the future of the program.
Coming Home to LeadWhen asked what inspired her to return to Putnam County as the head softball coach, Webb’s passion is unmistakable:
“Returning to Putnam County as the head softball coach was an incredibly meaningful decision for me. The rich tradition and strong sense of community surrounding the softball program were major factors in my decision. This program has a longstanding reputation for excellence, and being given the opportunity to return home and lead it was something I simply could not pass up. It’s not just about coaching, it’s about being part of a legacy, contributing to the continued success of a program that helped shape me both as a player and as a person. Having the chance to give back to the school and community that played such a big role in my own development is something I consider both a privilege and a responsibility.”
Coaching at Her Alma MaterFor Webb, coaching PC Softball isn’t just a job—it’s personal.
“Coaching at my alma mater holds a very special place in my heart. It’s more than just a coaching position, it's a full-circle moment in my life. Putting on the same colors I once proudly wore as a student-athlete now carries an even deeper meaning. There’s a unique sense of pride and purpose that comes with leading a program you once played for. I understand the culture, the expectations, and the passion behind Putnam County softball because I lived it. Now, I get to help guide the next generation of athletes through that same journey. It’s incredibly rewarding to invest my time, energy, and experience into a program that means so much to me personally, and to contribute to building a future that honors its past.”
Summer Recap: Building Skills and ChemistryThis summer was all about growth and preparation.
“One of the major highlights was our participation in team camps, which allowed us to compete against a variety of teams and further develop our skills in a competitive environment. Additionally, we played games throughout the week that provided excellent opportunities for real-time learning and improvement. Beyond competition, we spent a lot of time focusing on practice, honing our individual and team skills to ensure we’re better prepared for the upcoming season. The combination of these activities helped us build both technical ability and team cohesion, setting a strong foundation for the fall season.”

Back to the Basics Taking the helm as a new coach meant starting with fundamentals.
“One of our primary focuses was getting back to the fundamentals in every aspect of the game. We emphasized the importance of mastering the basics, whether it was fielding, hitting, base running, or situational awareness. Repetition was key, so we dedicated significant time to high-quality reps to build confidence, consistency, and muscle memory.”
A Team with HeartWhat stood out most to Webb wasn’t just skill—it was attitude.
“Anytime there’s change, especially with new leadership, it can be an adjustment, but this group approached it with openness and a team-first mindset. Their effort, adaptability, and commitment to growing together as a group stood out to me throughout the summer.”
Looking Ahead: Short-Term GoalsThe message is simple: win the day.
“As we head into the fall season, our primary focus is on continuous improvement. We aim to get better every single day, emphasizing the importance of winning each day, both in practice and in games. While our goal is undoubtedly to win as many games as possible, it's equally important to us that we restore and maintain respect for the program. We want our players to take pride in the work they’re putting in both individually and as a team, so that they can look back at the end of each day, week, and season knowing they gave their best effort and represented the program with integrity.”
Advice for the Next GenerationFor young girls in the district with dreams of stepping onto that field one day, Webb has a heartfelt message:
“Softball is a game that has given me so many experiences over the years. It teaches you life lessons along with allowing you the chance to showcase your athleticism. It takes dedication and a willingness to work. My best piece of advice is to give yourself a chance to fall in love with the game like so many girls in this school district have over the years.”
